ANU Centre for Social Research and Methods
ANU College of Arts & Social Sciences

I’m a demographer and senior lecturer at POLIS Centre for Social Policy Research in the College of Arts and Social Sciences. I teach social research methods and research population dynamics. My work is focused on public-facing impactful outcomes, including media translation of social trends. I’ve worked at ANU for 15 years, starting as a research assistant and casual sessional academic, before being employed in successive short-term contracts. I became continuing in 2021.

Education has been my passport to life. I come from humble beginnings marked by disadvantage – including homelessness, high-school dropout, poverty, and teen parenthood. I want others who’ve had it tough in life to experience the many opportunities on offer at university. I work to help strengthen higher education by promoting equity (and secure) representation among staff and students, so that people like my younger self feel welcomed in higher education. I’ve worked hard advocating for an inclusive workplace, and higher education more broadly, on ANU Council 2022-24 and am seeking to continue this work.

I commit to continuing my work championing staff conditions (including safe workloads), accountability, transparent communication and decision-making, recognition of the breadth of impactful work, and inclusive representation of marginalised people.
